At Berlin Fashion Week, independent designer Yasemin Akgül presented a collection that transforms couture into a language of resistance, identity and human connection.

Fashion has always reflected its time. In the hands of Berlin-based couturier Yasemin Akgül, however, clothing becomes something more: a visual instrument for social visibility, emotional expression and human connection.

Her latest collection, provocatively titled “NO, AMEN! NO, YES!”, unfolds as a deeply personal yet universal artistic manifesto. Rather than treating clothing as a purely aesthetic object, Akgül challenges the viewer to consider what fashion can communicate when words alone are no longer enough.

The Language of Couture

At the heart of Akgül’s aesthetic are sculptural silhouettes, intricate construction and an almost architectural approach to textile. Every look appears to carry its own emotional narrative, transforming the body into a moving canvas.

Traditional craftsmanship meets an unmistakably contemporary avant-garde sensibility. Deconstructed jackets create tension between contrasting textures, while monumental silhouettes constructed from hundreds of strips of black leather evoke movement, fragmentation and dramatic architectural structures.

Fashion as a Statement

The collection is deeply rooted in themes of identity, diversity and humanism. By sending models onto the runway carrying statements such as “SEID MENSCHEN” — “Be Human” — and messages condemning racism, Akgül turns fabric, texture and silhouette into tangible symbols of courage.

The garments do not exist separately from the message. Instead, the message becomes part of the construction itself. Text, body and material occupy the same visual space, creating a collection that functions simultaneously as fashion and contemporary social commentary.

A Couture Manifesto

Clothing becomes a message when the body becomes the canvas.

In an industry where avant-garde fashion can sometimes distance itself from everyday human emotion, Yasemin Akgül proposes a different form of contemporary couture.

Each piece presented during Berlin Fashion Week was developed and crafted by hand over a period of months. The result is a collection where culture, form, craftsmanship and storytelling exist within the same visual language.

NO, AMEN! NO, YES! ultimately asks a simple question: what happens when fashion refuses to remain silent?

When fashion speaks, the silhouette becomes a statement.

Yasemin Akgül’s latest collection demonstrates how couture can move beyond decoration and become a space for dialogue. Through craftsmanship, sculptural form and direct visual language, the designer creates garments that ask the viewer not simply to look — but to think.
